Ms. Turner has written a delightful, captivating book that impressed my nine-year-old granddaughter. With this review, I will do something different: I will write from the remarks of my granddaughter. She and I read the book together. When I asked her how she liked the book, she replied that it was a great book. When I asked her what she learned from the book, she told me that when we want to do something with all our heart, sometimes it takes us on a journey to get it and sometimes bad things happen. Sometimes people are mean to us. We think it is not fair, but it just happens. And when we go along our journey trying to find a way to solve our problems, we sometimes meet some very different people or other things that are scary. But, we need to learn to trust people who are different and make them our friends and let them help us. And we need to go after what we want in life, and not let things get in the way. And we need to realize that some things are just props, and we don't have to have them to do what we want to do. I asked her what she meant by props. She told me that her body was just a prop, and Anaya didn't need it to do what she wanted, but it helped her to dance.I found my granddaughter's remarks insightful and profound, just as I found the book to be.

A wonderful story of fantasy and warmth. It focuses on a girl who finds herself in a an unexpected world with animals that speak to her and hence the tilte of the story - unexpected friends. It's a story that is both lyrical and magical. Ultimately it's the heroine's pursuit to dance that drives the story and brings it to a satisfying conclusion. There's lots to be delighted with in this entertaining story.
Unexpected Friends is an appropriate fiction book for the 9 - 13 year old. The author takes the reader on an entertaining journey as the main character navigates her way back to wholeness with the help of some unlikely friends. The dialogue is casual and light as these unlikely comrades work through Anaya's plight.
The moral of following your heart to bring creative expression into one's life as well as persistence and bravery is clearly sent home to the reader.
An unusual, paranormal tale of friendship between a young girl and a vegan vampire. The story is about healing, finding hope, keeping a positive focus and overcoming obstacles through tenacity and self-esteem. The author's intention seems to be to inspire children to pursue their dreams. A good story to read to children 7-8 years old and up, if you want to teach them identifying their talents and pursuing their enthusiasm.
This intriguing story is filled with interesting mystical creatures and fascinating locales all in the service of a shy and reticent young lady, the title character Anaya. A dark evil threatens and unexpected allies come to Anaya's aid in her quest to overcome the evil and, at the same time, to overcome her self doubt and temerity, as well as some ingrained prejudicial preconceptions. The author has intertwined good and evil and light and darkness into a heart warming and inspiring tale of self-realization.
As young folks problems go, they don't get any bigger than this, like loosing your body. This is a super fantasy story which I as an older folk also enjoyed reading. This is Anya following her heart, following her dreams and the unexpected friends she meets along the way. An adventure story full of morals and messages. This was a breath of fresh air in my reading list and I'm so glad I picked it up. Give it a go and stick with, its a great ending. As I was told, Dance, everyday Dance.
What a rare treat! Normally I do not read children's books but this one called to me. I was not disappointed. I will definitely watch for the hard copy! I am not sure what I liked most. I liked the adventure, the acknowledgement that people are here for a purpose and that all creatures have a voice. I enjoyed that all of the characters worked together and overcame their own individual fears and hang-ups. There were so many elements of high science (dimensions) and earthy acceptance (all creatures have a voice) that I really enjoyed this. There is more here than just a child's tale. Now when is the next one coming out?
Jenevieve Turner takes us on a remarkable journey in her book, Unexpected Friends. While many of the characters seem improbable in real life, they and their situation are completely believable in the book. I found myself helping Anaya as she dove into the ground - and into herself - to solve her huge problem. Overall the story has a great message and an engaging plot that's easy to follow. I look forward to the next book in the series!
